Young artists at the cathedral: Tibor Koehne inspires with a new exhibition!
What is happening at Brandenburg Cathedral? An exciting project is currently underway that will enrich the local art scene. Tibor Koehne, a talented young artist from Berlin, has agreed to work with the art class at the Evangelisches Domgymnasium for several weeks. He is supported by art teacher Ingeborg Lockemann. The students work together on their own works of art, which are ultimately presented in their own exhibition.
Tibor Koehne, born in 1998, discovered his interest in art at an early age. Growing up in picturesque Ticino, he has been studying painting at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art since 2018. In addition to his intensive studies, Koehne also attended the experimental film class at the Berlin University of the Arts. His works revolve around places, people and time periods and address fundamental questions about our existence. Through numerous trips and visits to exhibitions, he has acquired a broad knowledge of the contemporary art and film scene.
Artistic exchange and residency program
Koehne is part of the renowned artist-in-residence program, which has been offering young, not yet established artists a platform in Brandenburg Cathedral since 2017. Every two years, the initiative accepts artistically outstanding master student graduates from selected art universities in order to offer them a public forum for their work. St. Matthew Foundation emphasizes that this program also serves to confront medieval and contemporary art and gives people in Brandenburg the opportunity to experience contemporary art in connection with Christian faith and cultural traditions.
The artists reside in the cathedral's courtyard for three months, where they have a studio at their disposal and become part of the local community. The end of their stay will be celebrated with an exhibition, which will be accompanied by artist discussions and guided tours. This collaboration with the cathedral high school's art class is an essential part of the program and ensures an exciting exchange between the students and the artist.
A look into the past
In the past, well-known artists such as Ingo Mittelstaedt with “KORRIDOR” (2017), Jan Neukirchen with “copypasta” (2019), Ivana Rohr with “You are not alone” (2021) and Jacopo Dal Bello with “Zeitfenster. The Cathedral in the Digital World” (2023) have been able to play in the impressive rooms of the cathedral and implement their creative visions.
Koehne may still be at the beginning of his career, but with his creative work and his commitment to his students, he already shows that he has a great knack for art. Preparations for the 2025 program are already underway and will bring a breath of fresh air to Brandenburg's art scene. The opportunity to promote such creative talents and establish a dialogue between historical and contemporary art is a valuable experience for everyone involved.
