Kaufland continues to grow: new branches are opening in several federal states!

Kaufland is expanding and is bringing a breath of fresh air to German retail. The discounter is planning numerous new openings in 2025, including both former Real and Globus stores. These redesigns are part of a comprehensive strategy to expand market share and increase competitiveness. Loud HNA There will be several confirmed openings in various German cities, including Brandenburg an der Havel, where the new branch in the Beetzsee Center will open on June 19, 2025.

New openings are also planned in North Rhine-Westphalia. Heiligenhaus will have a branch measuring around 3,300 m² on June 26, 2025. In Chemnitz in Neefepark, where a former Globus market is being thematically redesigned, the opening is planned for the second half of 2025. Just as important is the takeover of the location in the Kronenberg Center in Essen, which starts on July 1, 2025, although the exact opening date has not yet been set.

Expansion plans

The black group-owned Kaufland has big plans for expanding its locations. Around 300 new branches were opened worldwide in 2024, and a further ten new branches are already planned for 2025 by February 2026. This would increase the total number of Kaufland stores in Germany to over 780, strengthening its influence in the food retail sector. This is also reflected in an extensive investment package of 3.3 billion euros Echo24 reported.

The following locations are receiving a lot of attention among the planned new openings:

  • Göttingen-Weende
  • Haßloch
  • Cuxhaven
  • Mülheim-Kärlich
  • Schwentinental
  • Osnabrück
  • Weingarten

Economic backgrounds

The company is part of the Schwarz Group, which also includes Lidl. In the last financial year 2024/25, the two brands together reached around 14,200 stores in 32 countries. The group invested a total of 8.6 billion euros, of which 3.3 billion euros was concentrated in Germany, to further expand warehouses and branches. The plans are not only predominantly positive, but also bring with them challenges, for example caused by uncomfortable competitive conditions. The Federal Cartel Office is therefore also keeping an eye on the new takeovers according to BNN.

At the same time, the ver.di union emphasized the importance of securing jobs through takeovers. In 2020, an agreement was reached with Kaufland to ensure first-class working conditions for the employees of the closed Real stores. This commitment is also reflected in the creation of around 20,000 new jobs, 4,000 of which are in Germany.

However, there have recently been some negative headlines in several branches due to hygiene deficiencies. Kaufland responded by making temporary closures and bringing in external experts to ensure quality standards.

The focus is clearly on expansion and innovation, and when we can welcome the next new Kaufland branches remains exciting until the opening.
