Students for the city forest: responsibility and sustainability in the craft!

Brandenburg an der Havel, Deutschland - A highlight in sustainable forest management recently took place in the Brandenburg city forest. Pupils put on signs that indicate the PEFC certificate, which certifies the city forest an exemplary and sustainable management. This certificate not only refers to the economic aspects, but also takes into account ecological and social issues equally. The city forest thus sets an important sign of responsible action in nature, such as Meetingpoint Brandenburg.

In this context, the youngsters had the task of building 20 nesting boxes that they brought with them full of enthusiasm and initiative themselves. They received support from the urban forest workers who gave them valuable tips for increasing biodiversity in the city forest.

sustainable projects and commitment

The project week was not only instructive, but also very entertaining. After the work in the Bohnenland forest, the students explored the surrounding Havel waters by bike and often found time to swim. In addition, they visited the city center of Brandenburg an der Havel and took a one -time house boat tour that certainly left permanent impressions.

At the end of the project week, there were 200 euros that should now benefit the city forest as a donation. This sum is invested in a sustainable project in the forest from the municipal forestry company - another example of how to take responsibility for the environment.

PEFC certification-a sign of quality

In order to promote sustainable forestry, more and more communities are relying on PEFC certification, an important instrument to ensure sustainability in wooden use. This initiative was launched in Germany in 1999 and is now represented in 49 countries worldwide. In Germany there are over 68% of the forest area, which is about 7.5 million hectares, as well as around 2,500 companies in the processing chain PEFC-certified, such as Wald-Wiki illustrates.

The PEFC certificate is not only a sign of sustainable forest management, but also helps to secure the market access for forest owners without a certificate. Those who comply with the standards benefit from a premium of 100 euros per hectare. However, participation in the certification requires the signing of a declaration of self -commitment and usually lasts 2 to 4 weeks.

With these measures, the city and school children show how responsibility for our forest can look and thus set a strong sign for the coming generations. A good knack for nature and promoting consciousness for sustainable projects are the way to a greener future.
