Students pitch in: Fence protects Krugpark from the risk of falling!

Something was recently going on in the idyllic Krugpark in Cologne that amazed even the oldest trees. Students from the Bertolt-Brecht-Gymnasium actively helped and ensured more safety in their city forest. A sturdy fence was built over two days to specifically protect the steep embankment edges at the engagement pond, thereby increasing safety for all forest visitors.

Interest in nature conservation and practical craftsmanship were at the heart of this project. The students dug the holes for the fence posts at least half a meter deep - a challenge because the forest floor was solid and rooted. But with the support of city forest workers who gave helpful tips, the venture progressed quickly. Particularly noteworthy: the wood ran out on the first day! Don't worry, the forest workers quickly organized supplies so that the fence could be completed on the second day.

An important protection for nature

The new fence not only offers protection for forest visitors, but also makes a contribution to forestry. How Forest Prince explains, it is necessary to erect a wildlife fence to protect young forest crops from damage by wildlife. Solid protection is essential, especially when there are large numbers of game, such as roe deer, red deer and wild boar. The students built a deer fence that provides protection against damage caused by sweeping and browsing by wild animals. Thanks to different types of fences and simple construction methods such as knotted mesh, such a fence can also be set up inexpensively by laypeople.

There are many ways to construct a deer fence, ranging from wooden or metal posts to special knotted mesh, which are simple and cost effective. Such protective measures make sense for individual areas, while a well-thought-out wildlife protection fence is advisable for larger areas such as Christmas tree crops. Young forest crops generally urgently need this protection, as individual protection measures are usually not cost-effective.

Together for a better future

The students not only showed craftsmanship, but also commitment to their environment, and this was rewarded with a special souvenir: Each participant received a city forest cup as a reminder of this valuable project. Such initiatives are important for young people's awareness of nature conservation and the responsibility they have for their environment.

In times when environmentally conscious actions should be more important than ever, it is great to see that today's youth are actively involved and taking responsibility. How Meeting point Brandenburg reports, the Bertolt-Brecht-Gymnasium has already carried out numerous projects in the city forest in the past. It remains to be hoped that many more schools will follow this example and actively contribute to nature and environmental education.
