Storm alarm in Brandenburg: hurricane gusts and thunderstorms are threatening!
On Thursday, June 26, 2025, the weather conditions changed dramatically in Brandenburg. The day initially brought pleasant and dry weather, but by midday dark clouds began to appear. The German Weather Service (DWD) issued advance information this morning that was intended to prepare the population for possible extreme weather events. The first official thunderstorm warning for the Dahme-Spreewald district arrived around 4 p.m. [maz-online.de].
From 5 p.m., several parts of the country were included in the warnings, including Prignitz, Ostprignitz-Ruppin, Oberhavel, Havelland, Brandenburg an der Havel, Potsdam as well as Potsdam-Mittelmark and Elbe-Elster. An official severe weather warning followed at 5:07 p.m., warning of violent thunderstorms with hurricane-like gusts that can reach speeds of up to 105 km/h. In addition to the stormy winds, the DWD announced heavy rain and hail.
Prepare for storms
The weather situation is anything but harmless, as heavy gusts of up to 110 km/h and heavy rain of up to 30 liters per square meter are expected. This represents an increased risk of branches and trees breaking, as the DWD urgently points out. While the temperatures still rise between 27 and 32 degrees, the formation of thunderstorms is encouraged. The risk of severe weather developments is classified as high in several places in Brandenburg.
The Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation has already warned people to avoid parks and green spaces. Particular caution is required when entering Sanssouci Park and Babelsberg Park. Past storms have already caused damage in Potsdam, so the situation should be taken seriously. Fire and rescue services in Berlin and Brandenburg have already prepared for the upcoming storms and have requested additional personnel.
Thunderstorms must be taken seriously
Heavy thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and evening. According to the current information from the DWD, which was published at 10:30 a.m., heavy rain of up to 20 liters can be expected in a short period of time, as well as hail and squalls blowing between 70 and 85 km/h. However, the greatest dangers lie in possible hurricane-like gusts and very heavy rain, which can also lead to local flooding. The weather portal 14-tage-wettervorhersage.de also confirms the critical situation and provides information about the upcoming changes.
Around midnight the thunderstorms will finally move eastwards and bring significantly cooler temperatures between 21 and 24 degrees on Friday, which gives hope for relief after the storms. Until then, however, it is important to pay close attention and exercise caution.
