Brandenburg's mayoral election 2025: New and old faces in the race!
On September 28, 2025, things got going again in Brandenburg: citizens elected their new mayors in 18 municipalities. There were some exciting positions to fill, while old friends were able to defend their positions. According to reports from rbb24 A total of seven incumbents were able to enjoy re-election. Six new faces are taking office, while in five cases the voters have to decide again and a runoff election is pending.
For example, in Bad Freienwalde: There will be an exciting confrontation on October 19th between the AfD candidate Frank Vettel and his competitor Ulrike Heidemann from the CDU. Vettel took 35.8% of the vote, Heidemann followed closely with 32.2%. Things were less positive for the incumbent of Oranienburg, Alexander Laesicke, who was voted out with only 13.2%. In the runoff election, the two candidates Anja Waschkau from the AfD (28.5%) and Jennifer Collin-Feeder from the SPD (18.9%) face each other, both of whom only have to fight for voters' favor on October 19th.

A look at the other elections shows: In Rheinsberg, Frank-Rudi Schwochow (BVB/Free Voters) was able to prevail against his competitors with 65.2% of the votes. In Nuthe-Urstromtal, Stefan Scheddin, an individual candidate, remains in office with an excellent 92.9%. Ronald Thiel from the individual competitors in Pritzwalk also secured a clear victory with 60.2%.

In Teltow, André Freymuth from the CDU prevailed with 52.1%, while voters in Luckenwalde will decide on October 19th whether Jochen Neumann (35.1%) or Matthias Grunert from the SPD (15.7%) will take the helm. The election in Eisenhüttenstadt will be similarly exciting, where a decision will be made on October 12th between Maik Diepold from the AfD (37.8%) and Marko Henkel from the SPD (26.9%).
The elections in context
The mayoral elections in Brandenburg are not taking place in this form for the first time.
