Chaos on Vetschauer Straße: Two accidents in minutes!
On Monday afternoon, August 12, 2025, there were two traffic accidents on Vetschauer Straße in Cottbus, which followed each other in a very short time. The first incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. when a SKODA and a MERCEDES collided. As niederlausitz-aktuell.de reports, the property damage in this case was limited to several hundred euros. Fortunately, there were no injuries and no vehicles affected were disabled.
A few minutes later the second accident occurred, this time between an OPEL and a VW. Here the material damage caused was around 1,000 euros. In this case too, all vehicles remained operational, which defused the situation somewhat. The police were quickly on site to record the respective accidents and clarify the exact causes, as Berliner Sonntag reports.
Safety situation in road traffic
The two accidents shed light on the general safety situation in German road traffic. Statistics show that around ten people die in traffic every day in Germany. In 2016, there was even a peak in traffic accidents with 2.6 million cases registered, of which over 22,000 resulted in personal injury. One thing is clear: traffic accidents, even if they often have a minor outcome, are the order of the day, and the figures show again and again that, despite all efforts to ensure safety, there is still a need for action, as kfz.net illustrates.
Of particular concern is the increase in serious accidents among young drivers, who often get into trouble because of a lack of driving experience. This group has almost twice the risk of serious or fatal accidents. It is important not only to provide educational work, but also to promote modern safety systems in vehicles for novice drivers.
More incidents
In addition to the traffic accidents themselves, there was another incident in Cottbus on the same day: a square meter of rubbish burned on the site of an empty thermal power plant on Parzellenstrasse. The fire, which was extinguished after about half an hour, caused three-digit damage to property. An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.
The police also checked a 36-year-old cyclist on “Garteneck” street on Tuesday morning around 3:15 a.m. It turned out that the bike, a BULLS bike, had been reported stolen in July and had now been recovered. Further investigations into the driver's connection to the theft are already underway.
