Cottbus shines: new graffiti gallery opens on Blechenstrasse!

In Cottbus/Chóśebuz it's all about art - and in full color! The western wall on Blechenstrasse now shines as a new open-air gallery, decorated with creative graffiti by local artists. The project was initiated by Dirk Hiekel, who is better known as Koenichsohn. The city resident has already made a name for himself with various murals, such as an impressive work on the Cottbus Baltic Sea. The city provided the wall surfaces, while the artists themselves lent a hand and made the necessary preparations. Around two dozen graffiti with impressive imagery and different messages were created in this way.

Mayor Doreen Mohaupt emphasizes the positive collaboration between the city and artists and is pleased about the opportunity to give young talents space to develop. Another step in the right direction to position Cottbus as a city of urban art.

A creative project with history

The idea for the graffiti jam on Blechenstraße, at the corner of Straße der Jugend, has been brewing for two and a half years. In addition to Hiekel, the artists MJ from Kunst mit Herz are also organizing this colorful project. Preparations included plastering holes, straightening the wall and removing distracting greenery. These steps were necessary in order to make optimal use of the space. A year ago the project began to take more concrete shape, but the planning still needed some time to coordinate everything down to the smallest detail. Mayor Tobias Schick and the former head of the urban development department, Doreen Mohaupt, were actively involved in the planning.

Participation in the Graffiti Jam is open to artists who took part in the first three jams, as well as creatives from “Bunten Bahnhof”. And if you think it's already too late - don't worry! There are still 2-3 places for spontaneous participants who should coordinate with Dirk Hiekel in advance. Cottbus will finally become the new hotspot for urban art!

Art and community

Graffiti and public art projects not only help beautify the city, but also promote a sense of community. This form of art gives people the opportunity to express themselves creatively and help shape the city. Its influence should not be underestimated, especially in urban areas, where graffiti often functions as a medium of social communication. Cottbus now joins the list of cities that actively support graffiti and ultimately want to improve the cityscape.
