Cottbus is changing: the new regional beer Molle is exciting!
Beer lovers in Cottbus can rejoice! The new regional beer “Molle” celebrated its premiere on June 30, 2025 and immediately caused a real hype. The fresh barley juice product is now available at the Späti “Karli Consumer Bar” and at Drinks Hoffmann. This tasty drop was developed by Willi Heinrich and David Kowal, who wanted to respond to the increasing demand for a regional beer in Lusatia. “Molle” could become the new star in the Cottbus beer heaven!
The idea germinated about a year and a half ago and was pursued with a lot of dedication. The Bergquell brewery in Löbau was chosen as a production partner in order to avoid the financial burden of having your own brewery. After intensive testing phases with the Cottbus community, the feedback was consistently positive. The first batch was already sold out after a very short time! So if you want to grab a cool “Molle”, you should be quick.
A true Lusatian product
Particular emphasis is placed on regionality, which is also emphasized by Alexander Schömmel, owner of the Schömmel organic shop. The availability of the “Molle” in various stores makes it easy for consumers to support the local product. In addition to the sales outlets already mentioned, “Molle” is also available in the Schömmel organic shop at Franz-Mehring Straße 62. Future plans include not only non-alcoholic versions, but also larger bottle sizes - in the spirit of variety!
Willi Heinrich and David Kowal have the goal of establishing a beer that people in Lusatia can identify with. It remains unclear whether a Cottbus brewery can be built in the future, but hopes are high. After all, craft beer is on the rise in Germany and is becoming increasingly popular. Loud Statista The scene contributes to beer diversity and offers special types of beer outside of the mainstream.
The craft beer wave
Germany, as the bread and butter of beer, also has a lot to offer in the area of microbreweries. In 2020 there were over 900 craft beer breweries, although this number fell to 856 by 2023. The market share of small and micro breweries is less than two percent of total beer production. Although the trend has slowed somewhat in Europe, everything points to an increase in small breweries in the USA. The market share of craft beer there is already over 13 percent.
“Molle” is therefore not just a new product, but also part of a larger movement that could put Cottbus and Lausitz on the culinary map. The regionality and the passion behind production are what make the beer so special. So there really is something going on in Cottbus! All the more reason why every beer lover should grab it quickly and celebrate the opening with a glass of “Molle”.
