Cottbus' sea axis: A green masterpiece connects the city and the Baltic Sea!
On October 17, 2025, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the “Sea Axis” was held in Cottbus, a project that is intended to connect the city centers with the Cottbus Baltic Sea. Mayor Mohaupt has already described the sea axis as a new lifeline for Cottbus. The planned route will be implemented on the route of the former Cottbus-Guben railway line, which has been closed since 2002. The goal is a green and climate-friendly connection for pedestrians, cyclists and local public transport.
The 1.6 kilometer long route will be developed in several construction phases to ensure natural revitalization. The first section, from Franz-Mehring-Straße to the city ring, is scheduled to begin in 2026. Further sections are being planned, including the area behind the Dissenchener Straße level crossing. The preparatory measures began today, which include clearing bushes. Overall, the construction work will take around a year, with commissioning planned for the end of 2026 or the 2027 cycling season at the latest.
Art in public spaces
A special highlight of the Seeachse are the accompanying art projects, which are created in collaboration with the artists Katharina Hohmann and Seraphina Lenz. Their work was selected as part of the “AUS DER SPUR” competition. This installation is intended to not only help beautify the route, but also provide creative inspiration for the community. Around 600 Cottbus residents contributed to the design of three themed islands along the axis and demonstrated their commitment to attractive urban design.
The aim of integrating art in public spaces is to promote cultural identity and social cohesion. Such creative approaches help transform neglected areas into vibrant centers of activity, a concept that has already been successfully applied in examples such as the East Side Gallery in Berlin. The focus is on interactive installations that encourage citizens to actively participate and thus create a sense of belonging.
Funding and financing
The maritime axis is financed 100% by funds from the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility, with the total costs estimated at around 4.13 million euros. The Seeachse is therefore a defining project as part of the infrastructure development of the Seevorstadt and the Cottbus Baltic Sea and contributes to structural change in the region. The efforts to achieve sustainable and community-oriented urban design are clearly visible in the plans, and the commitment of the population indicates a high level of acceptance.
With the implementation of the lake axis, Cottbus will not only become more attractive for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport, but also for art lovers who can look forward to a unique experience of culture in the urban space. cottbus.de reports that ... and rbb24 adds that ….
