Energie Cottbus celebrates a 3-0 win against Mannheim's problem child!
After a long month without a win, Energie Cottbus was finally able to celebrate again on September 14, 2025. With a clear 3-0 win against Waldhof Mannheim, the Cottbus team celebrated their first three-pointer in the third division. An impressive 13,185 spectators gathered in the stadium on Ernst-Thälmann-Straße and created a great atmosphere. RBB reports that this game was particularly important for coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz as it was his first league success since the beginning of August.
The match started with a lot of action. After just 15 seconds, Mannheim's Arianit Ferati received his first yellow card. A short time later, three players, including Cottbus' Moritz Hannemann, lay injured on the grass - a turbulent start. The first goal came in the 7th minute when Axel Borgmann took the lead after a follow-up shot after Hannemann had previously been denied by the Mannheim goalkeeper. TAG24 reports that the Cottbus team missed another opportunity to increase their lead in the 16th minute.
Heated duel with “double superiority”
The game became heated and in the 24th minute Mannheim captain Lukas Klünter was sent off with a yellow-red card. But Cottbus continued to struggle against Mannheim, who were now on the defensive. Shortly before the break, Jannis Boziaris made it 2-0 in the 44th minute after a successful combination on the right side. RBB added that Mannheim tried to fight back into the game despite being behind, but without any tangible success.
In the second half the game was more even. Mannheim had the chance to score again through Felix Lohkemper, but Cottbus' goalkeeper Marius Funk held strong. In the 75th minute, Justin Butler finally made the decision and increased the score to 3-0 - a justifiable reward for the Cottbus team's offensive efforts. It is also noteworthy that Cottbus confidently got through the game with a “double majority”, even if Diego Michel had to leave the field injured in the 85th minute after all five substitutions had already been made.
A look at the table
With this important victory, Energie Cottbus climbed to seventh place in the third division table and now has eight points from five games played. Cottbus definitely showed a good knack for getting out of a difficult phase. In these last five games they have collected as many points as they desperately needed to climb up the table. FBref has compiled the statistics on previous performances - a powerful start to the third league that gives hope for further success.
