Energie Cottbus brings Guwara from FC Ingolstadt – squad is being strengthened!
Energie Cottbus is preparing for the new season in the 3rd league and has signed some exciting additions less than three weeks before the start of the season. On Monday, 24-year-old offensive player Justin Butler was announced, followed by Leon Guwara, a 29-year-old left-back who announced his move from FC Ingolstadt on Tuesday. These quick signings show that the club is ready to start the 2025/26 season with a breath of fresh air. With Cottbus' first competitive game against 1. FC Saarbrücken on August 2nd, the start of the season is getting closer and the anticipation in the club is increasing.
Sportschau.dereports that Guwara was able to prove himself during a three-week trial training in Cottbus and convinced those responsible. The experienced defender brings a lot of quality with him, as he has 44 first division games in the Netherlands (FC Utrecht and VVV-Venlo), 63 second division and 44 third division games. Coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz is sure that Guwara's experience on the left side of defense will be a valuable asset to the team.
New additions to the squad
In addition to Guwara, Justin Butler also joins the Energy squad. He shone in the seven preseason games with six goals - an impressive performance that drew many eyes to the fast attacking player. Butler has previously played for well-known clubs such as FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund II.
The commitments are not just about Guwara and Butler, other new additions have also been confirmed by the club. Ted Tattermusch, a 1.94 m tall striker from FC Carl Zeiss Jena, and winger Theo Ogbidi from Lok Leipzig will also strengthen Cottbus. Moritz Hannemann from the Würzburger Kickers is expected to take the midfield position, while Finn Heidrich will move up from the A-youth team, complemented by Lukas Michelbrink, who is coming on loan from Hertha BSC II.
Departures and planning for the future
However, Energie Cottbus also has to part with players. Edgar Kaizer is moving to Greifswalder FC, while Tobias Hasse, a long-time player at the club, is also leaving the club without his future destination being known yet. Other departures include Lucas Copado, Niko Bretschneider and Maximilian Krauß, who played important roles last season.
Those responsible are aware of the challenges and are planning not only for the upcoming season, but also for the future. The entire squad is currently being put to the test in preparation, which leads to Austria on July 15, 2025. The team would like to get used to this by the start of the season and build up the necessary fitness.
In recent years, Energie Cottbus has stabilized after difficult phases, including relegations and promotions, and established itself in the third highest division. The club remains a force to be reckoned with in Eastern football whilst continuing to build on the support of its loyal fans. The Friendship Stadium, now renamed LEAG Energie Stadium, offers an impressive backdrop for the challenges ahead.
