SV Waldhof Mannheim: Almost 160,000 euros punishment for pyro riots!

A new scandal about pyrotechnics and unsportsmanlike behavior once again causes excitement in the second Bundesliga. SV Waldhof Mannheim recently had to pay an almost six -figure punishment, some of which feeds on tumultuous scenes during their games. According to Liga3 appealing against two fines, a total of 170,335 euros were on the brink. But the objection was almost unsuccessful and the punishment was only reduced by 10,535 euros.

The majority of the punishment goes back to the game against Energie Cottbus, where a real pyro party took place in February 2023: 171 Bengal torches, six smoke bodies and twelve fountains were ignited. Bisk bodies also flew towards the field, which delayed the impetus by around two minutes. Another penalty of 49,800 euros remained after discriminatory calls could be heard during the game against Dresden. Here, pyros was also lit and a bright body came into a block with Dresden spectators: inside. The highlight of the riots: Mannheim fans urinate in beer cups and throw them in the direction of the opposing followers, while they also tried to break through a security goal and injured six security officers.

high penalties in the second league

Similar problems also met Hannover 96, which was punished according to Tagesschau with a fine of 198,400 euros. This sum results from several unsportsmanlike behaviors of the fans. The highest individual penalty that Hanover had to take was 82,200 euros, after a home game against SC Paderborn, in which over 90 pyrotechnic objects were ignited. Also in the away game against 1. FC Köln it was punished - 66,000 euros for at least 110 burning Bengal fire.

Both clubs are now trying to alleviate the financial pressure. Hannover 96 plans to use up to 66,100 euros from the overall penalty for their own safety or violence prevention measures. The situation is similar for the SV Waldhof Mannheim, who can use up to 53,200 euros for its own security measures. These measures should serve to prevent incidents in the future. The proof of the use of these funds must be provided by March 31, 2026 at the latest.

With a total of 218,915 euros, SV Waldhof Mannheim in the penalty table takes a sad fourth place. The events throw a shadow light on the fan scenes of both clubs, and it remains to be seen how things develop. In the second division, the question remains: How much are the clubs to do to maintain the image and safety of your games?
