VW overtakes Tesla: E-car sales are exploding in Berlin and Brandenburg!

The electric car world is currently upside down, and a look at Berlin and Brandenburg shows that Volkswagen is ahead. From January to May 2025, a total of 4,752 new electric cars were registered in Berlin, of which 828 were Tesla models. This results in a market share of 17.4%. But while Tesla remains the most popular brand in the capital, Volkswagen is doing better business overall. If you include brands like Audi, Seat and Skoda, the German car manufacturer is clearly ahead. The situation is similar in Brandenburg, where 3,075 electric cars were newly registered by May, of which only 302 were Teslas - simply far too few to keep up with Volkswagen, especially in the months of March and April, when the number of registrations literally exploded

Tesla under pressure

But times are anything but rosy for Tesla. In April 2025, the number of new registrations in Europe fell by over 50%; according to ACEA, sales fell by 46.1% to just 41,677 vehicles by April 2025. As a result, Tesla was overtaken by ten other manufacturers, including Volkswagen and BMW. This represents a massive decline, and compared to April 2024, it represents a 52.6% decline, which are alarming signals for the Californian company

The competition never sleeps: BYD, for example, was able to sell 7,231 vehicles in April, while Tesla only sold 7,165. It's no wonder that the pressure on the brand is growing. In the past, Tesla has distinguished itself primarily through its innovative strength, but the longer production times of the current model range and difficulties with the Cybertruck also cast their shadow on the future.

Market in transition

However, the European market for electric vehicles will not only show its dark side in 2025. According to an analysis by Electromaps interest in electric cars is growing. With sales of pure electric cars increasing by over a third, enthusiasts are switching to the new electric models. At least 15.3% of all new registrations in 2025 are purely electric vehicles, while hybrids lead the market with 43%.

The automotive industry in Europe can prepare for a change in trend, as German brands still enjoy a very good image in terms of quality and service availability. Volkswagen even doubled deliveries of purely electric cars in the first quarter of 2025, selling almost 260,000 vehicles in April 2025. This shows that German manufacturers continue to have a good hand when it comes to serving the wishes and needs of customers.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk is struggling with a change in strategy to counteract the decline in sales and slumps in profits. Given that Tesla does not have any cheaper models in its portfolio, it remains to be seen how further developments will affect the brand's sales figures.
