Woidke remains SPD leader: Stability and security for Brandenburg!
In an impressive re-election, Dietmar Woidke took over the position of SPD state leader in Brandenburg again on June 21, 2025 in Cottbus. With 84.9 percent of the votes, the delegates at the SPD state party conference confirmed their support for him. While this is a decline compared to the 90.8 percent he received in his last election two years ago, he still represents a stable force within the Brandenburg SPD. Woidke has been in office continuously since 2013 and is considered his party's longest-serving state leader after replacing Matthias Platzeck, as Radio Hochstift reports.
With 107 of 126 votes, the delegates were clearly behind Woidke and with this decision made it clear that they had a certain level of trust in him, even if the resignations raised questions within the party leadership. Former Interior Minister Katrin Lange, who did not appear at the party conference, had previously described dealing with her as unbearable and denounced intrigues in an open letter. She warned of difficult times if debates were not conducted respectfully and did not stand for re-election as vice-chair. Her resignation came after internal disputes over the dismissal of the head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Jörg Müller, reports tagesschau.de.
New faces at the party leadership
With the resignation of Katrin Lange, the choice of the new vice-chairman becomes important. Wiebke Papenbrock, Ines Hübner and Frank Steffen were presented as nominees. In addition, Kurt Fischer was elected as the new General Secretary of the SPD and received 78.9 percent of the votes. Fischer expressed optimism about the party's future unity, which is urgently needed after the problems of the last few months.
While these personnel decisions are important, the focus also shifts back to the content: In his speech, Woidke clearly spoke out in favor of an AfD ban if courts classify the right-wing extremist party as such. He emphasized that protecting democracy was a top priority and condemned the recent attack on a democracy festival in Bad Freienwalde.
A look into the future
The SPD finds itself in a challenging environment. The upcoming local and state elections in September 2024 will be crucial. In order to emerge from the current poll lows, in which it is behind the AfD, Woidke is relying on a clear program: “Security and stability” is the slogan with which the SPD wants to compete against the competition, and it highlights its economic successes in recent years. The Prime Minister has also announced that he wants to hire new police officers and abolish fees for early childhood care after 2025, according to the TAZ.
All of these measures will be necessary to win back voters' favor. Woidke, who is often described as an unobtrusive, pragmatic politician, has made it his mission to communicate directly with citizens. In order to move the party forward, it will be important to develop both internal stability and external success strategies so that the upcoming challenges can be mastered with a strong and unified demeanor.
