Ebersberg falls out of the top 20: Idyllic district slows down start-ups!

One could say that times are no longer so rosy for new businesses in the Ebersberg district. How Mercury reports, the Ebersberg district has lost its place in the nationwide top 20 regions with the most business start-ups and is now in 42nd place in the current NUI regional ranking. A bitter case that certainly does not go unnoticed for many entrepreneurs and those who want to become one.

2024 was a year in which more entrepreneurial initiatives were registered across Germany than before the corona pandemic. The NUI indicator, which measures the number of newly registered businesses per 10,000 working-age residents, averaged 136.0. This is a significant increase compared to 2019, when this value was 124.7. But Ebersberg, who was proud of 13th place in 2019 with a score of 176.7, has seen things go steeply downhill in 2024 with an NUI score of just 164.7.

The regional comparison

Anyone who reads between the lines will see that Ebersberg doesn't just have competition in its own state. The decline is clearly noticeable behind the surrounding districts such as Rosenheim, Starnberg and Dachau. The good news for the region: Other regions such as Koblenz and Cologne have risen in the field of entrepreneurial dynamism. The NUI ranking also reveals interesting trends - increasing start-up activity in cities and districts in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg and other federal states shows that the start-up landscape could become more lively.

A look at the best of the best: Leverkusen leads the 2024 ranking with an impressive NUI score of 254.5, followed by the Munich district with 242.9. Offenbach am Main, Miesbach district and Baden-Baden are also among the front runners. It is all the more bitter that Ebersberg has not only slipped, but has also fallen out of the most elite group of the top ten percent of over 400 districts and independent cities.

The causes and effects

What led to this regression? The changes in the framework conditions for entrepreneurial initiatives are certainly a crucial point. However, experts warn that random fluctuations cannot be ruled out either. So reported IfM Bonn that the imponderable recording of business registrations in 2022 and 2023 is not comparable to the current values. There were also 26 districts and independent cities from 10 federal states that deteriorated significantly - many of which were still in the first quarter of the ranking in 2019.

The trend speaks for itself: Even if the Ebersberg district has historically had strong values, a rethink needs to happen here and now. The future of the regional economy could depend on how well it succeeds in developing creative and sustainable solutions for start-ups and the general conditions.
