A major change is imminent for the RE2 regional express, which runs from Berlin to Cottbus. How maz-online.de reported, the route will be affected by extensive renovation work until April 2026. These measures are not only aimed at improving the infrastructure, but are also intended to entail a diversion via Calau, which will come into force from the end of 2026.
The changes result from a two-track expansion that will take place between Lübbenau and Cottbus from December 2026 to December 2027. However, this complete closure will make the journey time longer by a good 15 minutes, meaning that commuters will have to expect a total journey time of at least 106 minutes in the future, instead of the previous 92 minutes. Despite the renovations, the hourly connection to Cottbus will remain in place, with a rail replacement bus service being set up to maintain the connection.
Details about diversion and infrastructure
The diversion via Calau will ensure numerous connections in Cottbus, including to Görlitz and Forst. Commuters from Berlin and Königs Wusterhausen will benefit from this new route, even if the change could initially pose some challenges. The Alliance Greens are already calling for timely planning and realistic testing of replacement transport in order to avoid bottlenecks and overcrowded buses, as was the case during previous closures in Lusatia.
