Violent storm in Lusatia: Fire brigade busy with 500 missions!
After severe storms in Lusatia, the fire brigade and police are currently called upon to carry out numerous operations, but fortunately there are no reports of injuries. In the particularly affected regions, including Cottbus and the Dahme-Spreewald and Elbe-Elster districts, there was a remarkable flood of emergency calls. In the first hour after the thunderstorms occurred, concerned citizens called 911 81 times, followed by 109 calls in the second hour. This is reported by the Daily Mirror.
Thanks to good preparation, the regional control centers were able to cope well with the exceptional situation. Equipped with additional staff, they were able to respond quickly to emergency requests. There are currently around 150 missions underway, while over 320 have already been successfully completed. What is particularly pleasing is that the heavy rain also extinguished a forest fire near Fischwasser-rückersdorf, which defused the situation to some extent.
Preparation & operations
As the People's voice reports show that such severe weather events often lead to an increase in emergency calls. This puts a lot of strain on the control centers and the emergency services. This is where current research and data evaluations come into play in order to enable better preventive decisions.
A key finding from an analysis of past severe weather events is that situation services and shift management in particular can benefit. Strategies such as increasing the number of staff in the control center and specifically alerting section management centers are crucial in order to be able to act quickly and efficiently in emergencies. According to the study results, such measures can usually be implemented within a maximum of one hour. The operational forecasts for thunderstorm situations in particular offer great benefit, as thunderstorms often occur spontaneously and require quick decisions. Studies show that experiences from previous storms help to optimize decision-making.
The overall picture shows how important well-prepared structures and quick action are in crisis situations. While the current operations in Lusatia continue, there is hope that the situation will calm down quickly. The emergency services do valuable work and deserve our thanks for their tireless efforts in such capricious weather.
