Petra Specht from Bestensee has turned her quality of life around 180 degrees. After the loss of her husband, the 64-year-old longed for change and found it while camping at the Hölzernen See in Groß Köris. Over the years, she has not only discovered a new living space for herself, but also a community that gives her support. In 2016 she took the plunge and rented a caravan. At first she didn't think camping was desirable, but she quickly noticed that many like-minded people her age were seeking refuge there. This made her quickly throw away her initial concerns.

Atmosphere at the Wooden Lake

Campsites like the one at Hölzernen See are becoming increasingly popular, not only because of the attractive location south of Berlin and north of the Spree Forest, but also because of the many offers and modern sanitary facilities. A second home

“I created my little empire in the caravan,” says Petra proudly. Your cozy “summer residence” is equipped with a Hollywood swing, table and chairs and a small fountain. She set up a kitchen in the awning where she cooked magical dishes using gas flames. A raised bed with freshly planted tomatoes and strawberries delights your senses and offers a wonderful view of the Wooden Lake. “Here I can wake up to the sound of birds chirping, simply wonderful!” she enthuses.

The cost for their 100 square meter space is 1,300 euros annually plus 300 euros for the idyllic waterfront location. Pets are also welcome, but cost 30 euros. It's a sum that Petra is happy to invest because the community of long-term campers is priceless for her. “We help each other and always have time for a little chat,” she says, noting that the sanitary facilities are always clean, which means she only uses her own toilet in emergencies.

Activity and nature

Brandenburg is known for its impressive nature, which is ideal for active vacationers. With around 3,000 lakes, it is not only a paradise for campers, but also a hotspot for water sports and outdoor leisure activities. Petra commutes more than 30 kilometers every day to her job in Waßmannsdorf, but this journey has taken on a new meaning for her. "I'm glad I changed my priorities. Instead of an apartment with a balcony, I now have my freedom in nature."

Looking to the future with a smile, Petra plans to remain part of this camping community for a long time and continue to enjoy life in her “summer residence”.
