Decline at BER: Airport boss calls for more support from the federal government!

The latest evaluation from Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) shows a mixed result in terms of passenger numbers and flight movements. How maz-online.de reported, the airport experienced a decrease of 50,000 passengers in June 2023 compared to the previous year. This was the second month in a row that passenger numbers fell. The total number of flight movements fell to 17,149, around 800 fewer than in June 2024. Particularly notable are departures to the west of the airport, which increased despite the decline in passengers.

The airport company noted that the number of flight movements from the southern runway to the west via Dahlewitz increased to 4,672, which was around 1,000 more than in June 2024. The northern route also showed an increase, with 2,770 flights taking off in this direction. However, these developments led to an increase in noise in surrounding areas such as Müggelheim and Schulzendorf.

Growth despite challenges

berlin-airport.de nahm die Zahl der Flugbewegungen im Dezember 2024 auf knapp 14.800 zu, während die Luftfracht im Dezember um 21,5 Prozent über dem Vorjahresniveau lag.

Ryanair in particular stood out: with around 5.2 million passengers, the airline grew by 18.4 percent in 2024. In addition, airport boss Aletta von Massenbach emphasized the need for competitive location conditions in order to promote further growth.

Current trends in air transport

The latest figures from May 2025 show that German airports welcomed a total of 19.94 million passengers. This corresponds to an increase of 1.35 million passengers compared to the previous month. The airports also recorded growth of 3.9 percent in flight movements, according to information from adv.aero. Demand in European and domestic air traffic continues to rise, while intercontinental demand has declined somewhat.

With a recovery rate of 88.8 percent compared to the period before the 2019 crisis, the figures show that although air traffic is recovering, challenges remain. The need for discussion about competitiveness in German air transport is more relevant than ever.
