Dramatic evacuation in Kleinbahren: forest fire out of control!
Summer is coming to Brandenburg with brutal temperatures over 30 degrees and extreme dryness, which massively increases the risk of forest fires. As Bild reports, several forest fires are currently active in the south of the country, including in the Elbe-Elster district, where the largest fire is raging in the town of Babben and has already covered an area of around 12 hectares - that's around 17 football fields. This critical situation prompted the authorities to declare a major emergency at around 2 p.m.
The situation is particularly dramatic in the town of Kleinbahren, where around 120 residents had to be evacuated due to the impending danger. The evacuation is taking place in the direction of Sonnewalde, although no residential buildings have been directly affected so far. Even the surrounding schools and daycare centers were spared from the flames.
Under control, but working at full speed
A total of 36 fire engines and police forces are deployed to deal with the fire situation. However, the fight is particularly tricky because the area is considered “suspect of explosives” and therefore requires additional safety instructions. At the same time, there are other forest fires in places like Sorno, Fichtenberg and Proschim, which are currently under control.
An additional fire in Treuenbrietzen-Frohnsdorf, which has also been burning since midday today and covers an area of 13 hectares, is causing further concern. A helicopter was requested to assist in fighting the fire as the region is munitions laden. Fortunately, there is currently no serious danger to residents.
Challenges and experiences from the past
Brandenburg is considered the federal state in Germany most at risk from forest fires. This is partly due to the extensive pine forests, low rainfall and light sandy soils. According to maz-online, the forest fire season is strong from March to autumn. Last year, the forest fires in the region were less acute, but in previous years there were some catastrophic events, such as the devastating fire near Jüterbog in June 2023.
The pronounced weather conditions and the technical complexity make forest fire prevention and fighting a constant challenge. Between 1991 and 2017, the area affected by forest fires was significantly reduced, but the heat events of recent years, especially 2018 and 2019, have increased the risk again. Numerous firefighters and helpers constantly face this challenge. It remains important to invest in prevention measures that not only support firefighting, but can also contribute to the safety of residents.
But not only the authorities, but also the population are asked to avoid forest fires. Experience has shown that negligent actions and arson are important causes of ignition. Preventive measures, such as water extraction points and regular training for emergency services, will continue to be increased in order to reduce the future risk of forest fires in Brandenburg. The sight of flames in the forest must provide a further incentive to better protect the environment - because this requires everyone's cooperation.
