35 years of friendship: Lübbecke celebrates its anniversary in Bad Liebenwerda!

The city of Bad Liebenwerda honored the 35th anniversary of its twinning with Lübbecke in a colorful ceremony. Mayor Frank Haberbosch led a delegation from Lübbecke to the spa town to take part in the “Fountain Festival with Magpie Run”. On this solemn occasion, numerous citizens and guests gathered on the market square, where the celebrations took place in brilliant weather. Mayor Johannes Berger of Bad Liebenwerda and Mayor Haberbosch gave moving speeches, which were moderated by the voices of “Antenne Brandenburg”.

The “Fountain Festival with Magpie Run” took place between May 24th and 25th, 2025 and was officially opened by Mayor Berger at 2:00 p.m. A special thank you went to the sponsors, without whose support the festival would not have been possible. The sponsors included Mineralquelle Bad Liebenwerda GmbH, the Sparkassenstiftung Elbe-Elster and the private brewery Ernst Barre GmbH. The festival offered visitors a varied program that included musical performances and sporting activities.

A look back and forward

The town twinning between Lübbecke and Bad Liebenwerda, which was launched in 1990, has its roots in the connections between Protestant church communities. This historical relationship is reflected in the friendly encounters and the exchange of traditions. Haberbosch particularly invited Mayor Berger to visit the beer fountain festival in Lübbecke next year in order to further intensify the exchange.

In addition to the Elsterlauf, which attracted numerous participants and record participation, the festival also offered cultural highlights. The Goombay Dance Band and the dance ensemble Tanzladen 04, among others, performed, creating an exuberant atmosphere. Another highlight was the evening with Laura, the Helene Fischer double, and the party band Record Men from Riesa, who accompanied the celebration until late.

Partner cities in the international network

The town twinning between Lübbecke and Bad Liebenwerda is part of a large international network. In Germany, around 6,500 cities maintain partnerships with municipalities around the world. Cologne, the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, has the most in Germany with 24 twin towns. These encounters not only serve to promote cultural exchange, but also to promote understanding and friendship between nations. The first German city partnership was concluded in 1925 between Kiel and Sonderburg in Denmark.

Events like the Brunnenfest not only celebrate local culture, but also set an example for the common European identity. The town twinning shows that local administrations can make an important contribution to international understanding, which is particularly important in these turbulent times.
