Risk of burglary in Elbe-Elster: Protect your home now!

A worrying trend is emerging in Germany: the number of home break-ins has increased significantly. The media repeatedly reports on well-organized gangs that target apartments and houses. This development not only poses a threat to the security of citizens, but also requires increased measures to protect one's own four walls. Citizens are once again called upon to be vigilant and to take part in information events. An important event on burglary protection will take place on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the Pension Zur Mühle, Jagsaler Mühle 2, 04936 Schlieben. VDGN reports that Mr. Dehnz, a police consultant, will give valuable tips on burglary protection.

Participation in the event is free, but registration is recommended by July 14, 2025 at veranstaltungen@vdgn.de or by telephone at 030/514 888-205. Anyone interested in the topic is welcome, and friends and neighbors are also warmly invited. The course of the event includes a welcome by Jochen Brückmann, President of the VDGN, followed by a lecture on home protection.

Burglary protection in focus

Current statistics demonstrate the urgency of the issue: According to police crime statistics, there were around 77,800 burglaries in Germany in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of 181 percent compared to the previous year. Many burglars use simple tools to break open doors or windows. Apartments with tilted windows are particularly at risk, as the Sanier reports.

To best protect themselves, homeowners should take a few basic steps. The recommended protective measures include mechanical security such as mushroom head pins and burglar-resistant glazing. Doors should always be locked to make things more difficult for potential burglars. Weak points such as front doors, side entrance doors, garage doors and patio doors deserve particular attention, as the greatest risks often lurk here.

Leverage technological advances

Not only mechanical measures, but also modern security technology can make a decisive contribution to preventing break-ins. Alarm systems and video surveillance are effective ways to deter potential perpetrators. In addition, almost half of all burglary attempts fail because perpetrators take too long to get into the building. This shows how important it is to have invested security measures carried out by specialist tradesmen in order to guarantee the best possible protection.

Especially now that the number of burglaries is increasing again, it is advisable to invest in a solid security solution. According to the emergency call experts, the risk of burglary is higher, especially in urban areas and metropolises, so special caution is required here. The fall and winter months also pose a higher risk, as many break-ins occur during the day between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

This makes it all the more important that citizens inform themselves and actively participate in burglary prevention events. The upcoming information evening on July 17th in Schlieben offers an excellent opportunity to find out about protecting your own four walls and to exchange ideas with experts.
