New cycle path between Finsterwalde and Sorno ensures more safety!
On June 28, 2025 the time had finally come: the new, wide and safe cycle path between Finsterwalde and Sorno was ceremoniously inaugurated. The mayor Jörg Gampe cut the ribbon, supported by Mike Koehler from the state road department and the mayors Ronny Liebscher from Pechhütte and Elvira Vogel from Sorno. The musical accompaniment was provided by the Finsterwalder Spatzen, who performed both the singer's song and “The Little Green Cactus”, thus creating a happy atmosphere.
The total costs for the renovation amount to an impressive 850,000 euros. The financing partners include the federal government's special “City and Country” program, which is contributing 739,000 euros to the project, as well as a further amount of 50,000 euros from Stadtwerke Finsterwalde GmbH. The cycle path was not only widened - by half a meter - but also sustainably expanded, which promises more safety and comfort for cyclists.
Renovation with foresight
Construction work started in spring 2024, initially with tree felling and clearing. In September 2024, the old surface was removed, the corresponding base layer was prepared and then new asphalt was added. The cycle path was completed in May 2025, just in time for the inauguration.
Particularly noteworthy is the environmentally friendly construction method: old material was recycled and used for the base layer of the new surface. In addition, three solar lights were installed in obscure places to increase safety in the dark. This not only means more for safety, but also a step towards ecological mobility.
Cycling in focus
The expansion of cycling infrastructure is becoming increasingly important throughout Germany. The requirements are increasing as more and more citizens demand a bicycle-friendly environment and encourage municipalities to increase their cycling. A well-developed network of cycle paths could not only relieve city traffic, but also boost tourism and increase road safety. This is also the assessment of the Mobility Forum, which emphasizes how important qualitative measures are for cycling networks.
Nationwide, programs such as “City and Country” are now creating an important financial framework for these projects. The implementation of many plans often failed due to lack of financing. Together we are committed to a sustainable transport transition that not only benefits cyclists, but also improves the overall appearance of the cities.
The inauguration of the new cycle path between Finsterwalde and Sorno not only set an example in the region, but also took an important step towards future-oriented and sustainable mobility. There is definitely something there!

The new cycle path is an example of how modern infrastructure can be designed to meet today's demands while at the same time increasing the quality of life for all citizens.
