Peaceful CSD in Bernau: 600 participants defy right-wing counter-demonstration

On July 12, 2025, this year's motto for Christopher Street Day (CSD) in the city of Bernau was “Queer stays here”. Around 600 people marched through the streets from the train station, sending a clear signal for diversity and acceptance. Despite the announcement of right-wing extremist counter-demonstrations, the event remained peaceful and was considered a complete success by Mayor André Stahl (Left) and the CSD organizers, especially given the unpleasant weather.

There was a strong police presence on site to ensure the safety of participants and prevent riots. Looking at the situation, the emergency services are pleased that the event was peaceful - there were no clashes between the different groups. Only one participant in the right-wing extremist counter-demonstration came into the focus of the investigation because he displayed forbidden symbolism, specifically SS runes on his belt.

High number of participants despite adverse circumstances

The number of participants at the CSD exceeded the expectations of the organizers, who remained optimistic after the rain. Mayor Stahl praised the large number of participants and the peaceful conduct of the event at a time when similar events in the area, such as in Falkensee or Bad Freienwalde, were overshadowed by right-wing extremist counter-demonstrations.

As statistics from a survey conducted as part of Pride Month activities show, 83% of Germans know what a CSD is. In addition, 67% say they are familiar with the term queer and 40% identify as allies of the LGBTQIA* community. These numbers show the growing support and acceptance in society, although at the same time it is clear that challenges remain.

Make a mark

The CSDs are not only a celebratory event, but also an important political platform. The pride that many participants show is full of hope that discrimination will continue to be reduced. 54% of those surveyed see the CSD's political message as important. These findings are crucial because 62% of Allys actively advocate against discrimination - supporting friends, engaging on social media, or attending events to advocate for LGBTQIA* rights.

Despite the challenges, the CSD in Bernau and elsewhere remains a sign of change. With the growing participation in such events and the increasing support from society, it is evident that more efforts are helping to further increase the visibility of the queer community.

The positive experiences of the event in Bernau are reflected in the many other CSD parades that took place in cities such as Bad Belzig, Luckenwalde and Neuruppin.

Christopher Street Day remains an important step towards a fairer and more diverse society, and every contribution counts.
