Major fire in Karstädt: Oatmeal factory is on fire!
A dramatic incident occurred this morning in the small town of Karstädt in the Prignitz district: At 4:30 a.m. a fire broke out in an oatmeal factory, which has posed a major challenge to the emergency services ever since. Around 200 firefighters are now on duty to fight the flames, which are clearly visible from the commercial area in the area. Blazing flames and thick clouds of smoke characterize the scene of the operation Daily Mirror reported.
The residents were informed via a warning app that the fire had broken out and that there might be an odor nuisance. Fortunately, there are no reports of injuries so far as no one was in the factory when the fire broke out. The emergency services quickly initiated initial measures and brought the fire under control, with neighboring buildings out of danger. On-site emergency pastoral care also provides care for affected residents.
The source of the fire and the emergency services
The cause of the fire remains unclear. However, it is believed that a pellet press caught fire around 1 p.m., which led to the large fire department being called out. Loud MAZ Operations manager Norman Mundt immediately alerted other fire departments from surrounding towns such as Nebelin, Dallmin, Blüthen and Perleberg. The Perleberg volunteer fire department provided a turntable ladder and a large fire engine to ensure the water supply.
A total of 51 fire fighters were on duty, equipped with heavy respiratory protection. While firefighters helped fight the fire directly inside the factory, a thermal imaging camera was used to detect embers. Although the fire was brought under control relatively quickly, extinguishing work took until around 9 p.m. because machine parts had to be dismantled and there was still a significant amount of smoke.
Consequences and outlook
The amount of damage caused by the fire is currently unknown. Production at the affected oat hulling mill has been stopped for the time being while investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing. Such incidents are not isolated: globally, fires are a central issue in the fire department's armaments sector. According to the currently published report № 29 on fire statistics 2022, it is shown that various fires, the causes of which are listed in detail in a table, represent an ongoing challenge worldwide.
