Major fire in Gohrischheide: Fire brigade fights for control!

A large fire broke out in Gohrischheide, Saxony, and partly spread to Brandenburg. It is a spicy scenario that has mobilized fire departments from both federal states. According to forest fire protection officer Raimund Engel, the forest fire has expanded dramatically and is now affecting an area of around 600 hectares - a tenfold increase in the area affected in the last few days. Over 200 firefighters, including 65 from Brandenburg, are fighting the flames together, while two emergency services suffered serious burns during the extinguishing work. A clear picture of the situation: The fire at the national border is currently not under control.

On Wednesday night, the fire between Lichtensee and Neudorf was perceived as particularly critical, so the fire brigade fought the flames at the front more than once throughout the night. Interestingly, farmers also came to support the fire department in extinguishing the fire. Two locations were also evacuated on Wednesday, including a residential home for severely disabled people, whose 45 residents had to be taken to a safe area due to the danger. But the nervousness didn't last long - the warning for Lichtensee was lifted after the situation stabilized.

Evacuations and dangerous situations

The situation is still tense. Numerous fires occurred in Brandenburg on Tuesday and Wednesday; there were twelve on Wednesday alone. Larger fires on former military training areas in Jüterbog, Kleinbahren and Frohnsdorf, which have fortunately been extinguished, were particularly serious. Nevertheless, the forest fire risk situation in Brandenburg remains tense, while local showers and thunderstorms are forecast, which could further complicate the situation.

It is a worrying situation that not only poses massive challenges for the fire department, but also raises questions about the financial consequences of the large-scale operation. Zeithain Mayor Mirko Pollmer expressed concerns about the financial burden on his district. Given the speed at which forest fires spread, it is clear that they not only quickly endanger large areas, but can also cause serious damage, as current reports on forest fires in Germany show. In 2022, for example, over 3,000 hectares of land were destroyed - the highest value in the last 30 years (rbb24, MDR).

Causes and consequences of forest fires

The most common causes of wildfires are arson and negligence. Remarkably, a shocking number of around half of the fires had no known cause, highlighting the importance of prevention measures. According to Statista, only 27 fires in Germany in 2023 were of natural origin (Statista). This leaves us with an urgent question: How will these extreme events be dealt with and what can we do to avoid them in the future?

Although Germany has not had the high number of forest fires in recent years as southern European countries, the situation remains critical. Almost 37,000 fires were counted worldwide in the first half of 2023 in the Brazilian rainforest alone. Figures like these should give us pause about the effects of climate change. In this country, we are well advised to be attentive and face the challenges of the forest in order to secure habitats for people and animals.
