Aronia from Paulinenaue: The secret weapon against unhealthy nutrition!

In the tranquil community of Paulinenaue, in the heart of Havelland, Nadine and Mike Bittner establish themselves with their passion for the aronia berry. They founded their company in 2017, inspired by a vacation where they met an elderly couple with sea buckthorn products. Starting with an area of 2,500 square meters, the Bittners now farm an impressive four hectares of aronia berries, which come from Mike's grandparents. By reclaiming leased space, they were able to expand their area and continue pursuing their vision. But the journey is anything but easy – Aronia berries are less well-known compared to other fruits, which presents both challenges and opportunities.

The Bittners' range is remarkably diverse. It includes aronia juice, spreads, liqueurs and syrups, which are produced in an organically certified cider factory. Nadine Bittner, who is responsible for product development, is constantly experimenting with new recipes and letting customers taste the creations at markets. In addition to aronia, blueberries, raspberries, currants and rhubarb have also been grown in-house since 2024. Mike, who also works in auditing, ensures that the 13,000 aronia plants develop splendidly.

Growth of the aronia berries market

With the Bittners you have your finger on the pulse, because the global market for aronia berries is booming. According to an analysis, the market is valued at $720 million by 2025 and could grow to $989 million by 2030, at a CAGR of 6.90% ( Mordor Intelligence ). This robust growth is due to increasing health awareness and demand for nutrient-dense foods, making aronia berries an increasingly popular component of plant-based diets.

Demand is particularly high in North America, where there are over 1,047 aronia berry farms. Europe is also showing strong growth with a forecast annual growth rate of 6.57%. In Asia-Pacific, where the market is considered to be growing quickly, there is a lot of potential for aronia berries, which are still relatively unknown there ( Straits Research ).

The health benefits of aronia berries

Aronia berries are not only delicious in terms of taste, but are also important in terms of health. They are known for their high antioxidant content and can reduce the risk of numerous diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and even certain types of cancer. These health benefits contribute significantly to the increased demand for aronia berries and position them as a valuable ingredient in beverages and foods.

However, the challenge of working with lesser-known fruit also has its advantages. “We have the freedom to let off steam in product development,” describes Nadine Bittner. The opportunity to experiment with different recipes and involve customers in the process offers a special experience and strengthens the brand's local ties.

In this creative environment and with a growing market behind them, the Bittners are optimistic for the future - and the first harvests won't be long in coming. It's that time again at the end of August/beginning of September, and the hard-working Bittners can be proud that their passion for the aronia berry delights people in the region and beyond.
