Copper theft in Havelland: Seven men caught red-handed!

On an explosive night in Havelland, the federal police arrested seven suspected non-ferrous metal thieves. The men, aged between 19 and 41, are said to have stolen around five tons of copper cable from a railway line on the night of September 9, 2025. Loud rbb24 The perpetrators were observed by plainclothes officers when they were caught loading the metal into a van around 12:20 a.m.

The men then drove in several vehicles towards Autobahn 10. The concentration of their escape attempts came to an abrupt end when federal and state police forces stopped three vans in Staffelde, Vehlefanz (both Oberhavel) and on Autobahn 24. Interestingly, there were already wanted notices against two of those arrested: one for property crimes and the other for driving without a license. Officers seized both the vehicles and the stolen metal, and the group is now being investigated on suspicion of particularly serious theft.

Stay behind bars was short

On the orders of the Potsdam public prosecutor's office, all seven men were released. This raises questions about the effectiveness of legal measures, particularly in a country where theft of valuable materials is commonplace. In another incident that only took place in October 2024, around 850 meters of high-quality copper cable worth an estimated 15,000 euros disappeared from a construction site in Mörfelden-Walldorf. There, too, the perpetrators used clever methods by separating the cable from a cable reel and escaping in a larger vehicle. The federal police then initiated an investigation, but the search for witnesses was unsuccessful. Thefts in the current context

Such incidents are not isolated and shed light on the overall security situation in the country. Loud Numbeo, Germany ranks relatively low in international comparison with a crime index of 39.56. However, concerns about property crime remain present, particularly in urban and industrial regions. The value and demand for metals such as copper remain high, mobilizing the activity of thieves who are not afraid of the bitter night.

The most recent case clearly shows how important observing civilian officers were in maintaining public safety. Whether through preventative measures or increased surveillance, it remains to be seen how security authorities will respond to these repeated incidents.
