Since the beginning of the Pride month in June 2023, a rainbow flag is blowing in front of the town hall that is a strong sign of tolerance, diversity and the rights of the LGBTQIA+community. Mayor Sven Richter, who followed the action with regret, emphasized that despite these incidents, the flag should continue to get stuck at the town hall. A new rainbow flag will already be hoisted on Monday to set a strong sign against destruction. The origin of the application was also recognized to the flag, which was submitted by the Bündnis 90/The Greens faction. This was rejected by the AfD, which additionally fueled the political discourse in the community. The Green Group Chairman Anna Mohn described the decision as an important sign of respect and acceptance.
Despite resistance, a sign of hope
at a time when the rights of the LGBTQIA+community are under pressure worldwide, acceptance in Germany is high, but there is still a lot to do here.
