Runoff election in Nauen: Who will be the new mayor on September 28th?

The eagerly awaited mayoral election took place in the city of Nauen im Havelland on September 14, 2025. The first round of voting did not produce the desired result, so there is now a runoff between the two main candidates. Michael Wibersinsky from the Wir für Nauen initiative won 47.3% of the votes, while the incumbent mayor Manuel Meger from the Rural Voters' Association received 31.4% of the votes. This means that the two will go into the runoff election on September 28, 2025, as rbb24 reports.

The election date attracted around 16,000 eligible voters to the polls. From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., citizens had the opportunity to cast their vote and thus elect the new mayor for the city of Nauen, which has around 20,000 residents. Given that no candidate achieved an absolute majority, it will now be an exciting duel. The CDU candidate Daniela Zießnitz fell by the wayside with only 5.5% of the votes, followed by individual candidate Sven Kilian, who received 15.9% [maz-online].

Michael Wibersinsky, born in 1985, is an intensive care physician and was only elected to the city council in 2024. Supported by the local left-wing parties, he plans, among other things, to set up a community café to better integrate citizens' issues and to improve the connection between the districts and the city center. A citizen's bus could contribute to this, as Wibersinsky outlined in his plans.

His challenger, Manuel Meger, born in 1982, has been in office as mayor since 2018 and has already achieved some success. Under his leadership, four new daycare centers were opened and the fresh produce market was launched. Meger is committed to revitalizing the old town and is planning to renovate the Theater of Friendship in order to promote cultural life in Nauen.
