THW in constant operation: Over 360 helpers are fighting against storm chaos!

A violent storm caused numerous disruptions and operations in Berlin and the neighboring federal states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt on the night of Thursday to Friday, June 27, 2025. The thunderstorm front not only brought heavy rain, but also devastating squalls, some of which reached hurricane-like proportions. Loud City report Over 360 emergency services from the Technical Relief Agency (THW) were mobilized to repair the damage.

The fire brigade was quickly in continuous operation in Berlin: a total of 300 missions were recorded up to 7:30 p.m., with numerous pedestrians also being injured n-tv reported. The districts of Nord-Spandau, Heiligensee and Tegel were particularly affected. Fallen trees and broken branches caused traffic delays, and even boats overturned on bodies of water, forcing people to be rescued.

Massive damage and large emergency forces

The THW emergency services took on a variety of tasks, including chainsaw work and the removal of dangerous components. Their main focus was on the Berlin city area, where 256 helpers were on the move, while 93 emergency services were deployed in Brandenburg and 13 in Saxony-Anhalt. The situation was particularly dramatic in the districts of Havelland and Oberhavel, which were severely affected. Support was provided to local firefighters who had already been on continuous duty during a previous storm on Monday, when at least one person was killed by a falling tree and several people suffered serious injuries.

The prevailing weather conditions are not only important locally. Scientists are concerned about the increase in extreme weather in Germany, as the German Weather Service summarizes in a current set of facts. Global warming is leading to an increased frequency of such extreme events. Regional shifts are clearly visible and the likelihood of new temperature records increases. North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rhineland-Palatinate areas are particularly affected, where flood events also caused massive damage. These developments cannot be ignored and also raise questions about future weather stability. What does this mean for the safety of residents and preparation for such natural events?

Outlook and follow-up

The operations of the THW forces in Berlin and the surrounding area have now largely been completed, although follow-up work will still be necessary in the affected areas of operation. Such weather is to be expected and society should be prepared to meet such challenges. Past and future severe weather events are an impressive indication that climate change is also influencing weather conditions in our region. It remains to be hoped that those affected will soon be able to return to normal everyday life, because nature was once again at work with full force.
