Mourning for Rainer Jähnke: The pioneer of sport in Havelland has died

An important personality in the local sports landscape has passed away. Rainer Jähnke, the long-time chairman of the Rathenow district sports association and later of the KSB Havelland, died on August 6, 2025 at the age of 80. Jähnke was born on January 17, 1945 and spent his childhood in Semlin, Rathenow and Westhavelland. As a civil engineer, he not only had a professional passion, but also a great enthusiasm for athletics, which accompanied him throughout his life, as maz-online.de reports.

Although he wasn't exactly known as a buddy type, Jähnke always had a fine sense of humor, which made him popular with people. He was significantly involved in the founding of VfL Rathenow, together with Lothar Ohst, and was a crucial figure in the merger of the Nauen and Rathenow district sports associations. His vision led to the initiation of the annual sports honor in Havelland, which he supported with all his heart. The free training for children and young people in the sports halls and on squares was particularly important to him, as his obituary impressively states.

Networking and engagement

Jähnke was also a founding member of the Havelland partnership association. Through him, numerous contacts were made with sports associations in Rendsburg-Eckernförde and Siegen-Wittgenstein. Even after his active time as KSB chairman, he did not miss the opportunity to take part in annual meetings, sports honors and anniversaries. This shows how well anchored he was in the sports family. The funeral service in honor of Rainer Jähnke will take place on August 25, 2025 at 12:45 p.m. at the municipal cemetery in Rathenow, where many companions and friends will pay their last respects.

The name Rainer itself has an interesting meaning that goes back to “decisive warrior”. This origin from Old German gives the name a special depth. Rainer Jähnke embodies this spirit to a certain extent, because his involvement in sport was characterized by assertiveness and a clear focus on promoting young talent. According to thinkbabynames.com, Rainer is one of the less common first names, as is the artist Rainer Maria Rilke, whose works continue to inspire many people today.

His cousin, who was born in Germany in 1940, had a similar passion for the sport, which perhaps also illustrates the connection between the names and their meaning. Despite the sadness over the loss of Rainer Jähnke, his work and influence on the sports community in Havelland will not be forgotten.
