Coalition crisis in Brandenburg: BSW plans to resist broadcasting reform!

In Brandenburg the political landscape is simmering, especially when it comes to the hotly debated state treaties on broadcasting reform and youth protection. How daily news reports, the BSW (Brandenburg State Association of Social Democrats) has reservations about these important contracts. A crisis meeting between the SPD and the BSW, which was intended to clarify differences, was canceled at short notice. The SPD described the meeting as “unnecessary,” which raised eyebrows among observers of the political scene.

However, BSW Vice Crumbach remains optimistic. Nevertheless, the situation is tense: without the consent of the BSW, the coalition could lose its majority in the state parliament. The SPD and BSW currently have a narrow majority of two votes, while they hold five out of nine votes in the main committee.

Criticism of the state treaties

The state treaties, which are due to come into force on December 1st, concern the reform of public broadcasting and the protection of minors on the Internet. The BSW is calling for a more comprehensive reform and is concerned that there is a risk of excessive government intervention in the protection of minors. These reservations are not unfounded, especially since the BSW federal executive board has already rejected the contracts. In comparison, the BSW in Thuringia approved the reforms, while similar approval was not given in Saxony.

The clock is ticking: all 16 state parliaments must approve the Reform State Treaty by November 30th. While support is expected from the SPD and the CDU opposition in the state parliament, the BSW's position remains unclear, especially for Brandenburg, where approval is still open. Lower Saxony, on the other hand, has signaled that it is ready to agree.
