In the middle of Brandenburg's lively cultural scene, the focus is on the exhibition “In the beginning there was... the word”. On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Bettina Engel will personally guide you through her diverse works, which are characterized by the inspiring texts of the writer Thomas Brasch. The event will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Fouqué Library, located at Altstädtischer Markt 8 in Brandenburg an der Havel. Admission is free and donations for the artist are welcome. Anyone interested must register either by phone on (03381) 58 4203 or directly in the library, as on the website stadt-brandenburg.de is to be read.

The opening was celebrated on April 4, 2025, and the exhibition is part of the program for the first nationwide Night of Libraries. It shows a selection of 30 graphics and paintings that have been created since the 1990s and deal thematically with the fusion of language and image. In particular, the “Transcription” series, which has been developed since 2023, reflects the lyrical texts of Thomas Brasch and addresses language and structure in a powerful way. Engel thus translates linguistic impulses into visual forms that could be of great interest to visitors. The opening hours of the exhibition are Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The exhibition can be seen until August 31, 2025 bettinaengel.de reported.

Suggestions and exchange

A very special highlight of the exhibition is the personal tour by Bettina Engel, which gives visitors exciting insights into her working methods. During the tour, guests can talk to the artist, ask questions and exchange ideas about Brasch's texts. In today's world, when contact with art and literature is often characterized by digital media, this personal exchange becomes even more valuable.

But what makes Thomas Brasch so special? Brasch's literary work is closely linked to his biography. As an important German writer, he worked in the GDR and West Berlin and was known for his critical discussions of the political reality of his time. His best-known work, “The Sons Die Before the Fathers,” is considered a milestone in GDR literature. Brasch discussed the repression and pressure that the system exerted on the individual. His prosaic texts are often poetic and invite deep thoughts through surrealistic elements. The latest volume “You have to run against the wind” presents different types of texts and offers an exciting look back at his diverse work, as on bersarin.wordpress.com is described.

This exhibition and the associated events not only honor an important literary influence, but also make the connection between visual and literary art impressively tangible. For all art and literature enthusiasts in the region, it's an event that you simply shouldn't miss!
