Art meets language: Bettina Engel invites you to an exclusive tour!

A very special exhibition awaits art lovers in the idyllic Fouqué library in Brandenburg an der Havel: “In the beginning there was... the word”. artist Bettina Angel is showing a total of thirty fascinating works here until August 31, 2025, inspired by the texts of the important writer Thomas Brasch. This collection enables visitors to experience the translation of linguistic impulses into artistic forms up close. Bettina Engel, who began with unique graphics in the 1990s, has continued to develop since then and presented her current series “Transcription” in 2023, which deals intensively with Brasch’s lyrical texts.

The opening took place on Friday, April 4, 2025, and was part of the program for the first nationwide Night of Libraries. At this opening, the author Marion Brasch was able to read from her work “From now on there is peace”, which further enriched the cultural evening. The exhibition is not only an artistic examination of language, sound and structure, but also invites you to discover the connections between visual, literary and written language.

A look beyond Brandenburg's borders

The exhibition “In the beginning was... the word” also fits into the contemporary art discourse, which is also booming in cities like Berlin, in complete contrast to Brandenburg. Hundreds of galleries and art institutions are active in the federal metropolis, offering a wide range of contemporary art, from painting to film and media art to digital NFT projects. Established places such as the Academy of Arts or the House of World Cultures promote discourse and exchange in the art scene. Visit Berlin illuminates with numerous events such as the Gallery Weekend or the Berlin Art Week, which regularly attract art enthusiasts from all over the world.

While big names from the international art scene are vividly represented in Berlin, Bettina Engel's exhibition in Brandenburg shows that notable artistic debates are also taking place in smaller cities. With their work, artists like Engel contribute to the diversity and relevance of contemporary art in Germany and make it clear how important it is to create and promote cultural offerings outside of the metropolises.

A visit to the Fouqué Library is definitely worth it to immerse yourself in the innovative world of Bettina Engel and rediscover the magical connections between writing and images.
