On Sunday there was a shocking incident in Bad Freienwalde, Brandenburg, when a group of masked attackers attacked a festival for diversity. The State Chancellery spokeswoman expressed her dismay at the incident and emphasized that such attacks should not be tolerated in a modern society. The Interior Minister of Brandenburg, René Wilke, agreed with this view and expressed concern about the increasing willingness to use violence among right-wing extremists. Police circles reported that the attackers fled before the emergency services arrived, even though they were already on site. The police are now investigating dangerous bodily harm and are asking witnesses for information.
The effects of violence
The violence in Bad Freienwalde is not isolated. There is a rise in right-wing extremist violence in Germany that cannot be ignored. In 2020, the Federal Criminal Police Office registered over 23,000 such crimes, with the number of violent attacks continually increasing.
These developments are alarming. Many people who advocate tolerance and diversity are facing increasing threats. It was also reported at the most recent event that around half of the posters were torn down in advance. Nevertheless, the participants were not discouraged and continued with their idea of a colorful Bad Freienwald, supported by the police, who took over the protection of the event.
After the attack, representatives of the alliance “For Tolerance and Against Right-Wing Extremism” are calling for increased commitment to an open, diverse society. They expressed shock at the incidents and stressed the need to strongly condemn such attacks. Jule Grienitz, a spokeswoman for the alliance, was present at the attack and reported on the cruel reality that many participants had to experience. Injuries such as a bruise and bruises clearly show that the attackers used full force.
In this context, the question arises as to how society can react to such incidents. In view of the growing threat from right-wing extremism, active intervention by civil society is essential. The state security agency has taken over the investigation because a political background cannot be ruled out. This development is part of a worrying trend that is important to keep an eye on.
