Mayoral election in Nauen: Runoff election between Wibersinsky and Meger!

On Sunday evening, September 14, 2025, the mayoral election was held in Nauen (Havelland). The first round of voting brought exciting results. Michael Wiebersinsky from the “We for Nauen” initiative stood out from his competitors with 47.3 percent of the vote. Incumbent Manuel Meger from the Rural Voters' Community came in second with 31.4 percent. This result means that a runoff election will take place on September 28, 2025 as no candidate was able to achieve an absolute majority. Sven Kilian, the AfD's individual candidate, got 15.9 percent and was eliminated, while Daniela Zießnitz from the CDU was also unable to move forward with 5.5 percent.

In total, almost 15,000 citizens in the city of Nauen were eligible to vote, with voter turnout at around 45 percent. Such numbers are not unusual, as voter turnout in local elections in Brandenburg has historically been rather low. Many people are often not clear about the role of mayors and their influence on local politics. This also affects the presence and activity of voters, who sometimes feel deterred from getting to know the candidates better by a lack of time or insufficient information.

The candidates at a glance

Let's take a look at the two main candidates for the upcoming runoff election:

Both candidates will now focus their campaign strategies over the next two weeks in order to win as many votes as possible. The focus is on the needs of citizens and the further development of the city. Daily Mirror reports that the election campaign in Nauen is just as hotly anticipated as the upcoming elections in other municipalities in Brandenburg, where new mayors are also being elected.

In addition, there were also elections in Wriezen (Märkisch-Oderland) on the same day. Incumbent Karsten Ilm (CDU) can run in the runoff election against Thomas Knels (AfD) on October 12th. Ilm achieved 48.8 percent in the first round of voting, while his challenger got 27 percent. The elections in Brandenburg are not only important for local politics, they also offer citizens the opportunity to have a direct influence on municipal processes and to bring their views and wishes into politics.

Overall, it appears that the mayoral election in Nauen promises to be an exciting race that will probably trigger some discussions. Citizens are called upon to take an active part in the political events of their city.
