Major fire in Hönow: Fire brigade fights against fire and explosions!
On Saturday evening, June 28, 2025, the fire brigade was called upon in Hönow. Residents reported massive smoke development on Mahlsdorfer Straße around 8 p.m., which promptly alerted the Oderland fire department control center. The persistent, dense, black smoke and frightening banging noises suggested a major operation. When the first emergency services arrived at the scene of the fire, the operational cue was increased to alert additional support, reports maz-online.de.
The scene of the fire turned out to be a garage on private property in which several bales of pressed hay were stored and which were fully engulfed in flames. This particular situation presented firefighters with major challenges, as the hot and smoky environment required them to fight the flames using heavy respiratory protection. Numerous emergency services and several fire engines were on site throughout the operation, supported by the police, who secured the site. Fortunately, according to initial reports, there were no injuries, but the cause of the fire remains unclear. The police have started an investigation.
Previous fires and wildfire risk
The risk of forest fires in Brandenburg is currently extremely high. According to statistics, the risk is further exacerbated by increased periods of drought and heat caused by climate change. In recent years, Germany has been increasingly affected by forest fires, with over 1,200 hectares damaged in 2023 and more than 3,000 hectares in 2022, representing the highest area in the last 30 years. A good portion of these fires were due to arson or negligent actions, according to data from Statista show. Therefore, it is recommended to exercise caution in heavily forested areas and avoid unnecessary risks.
The situation in and around Hönow remains tense while the causes of these recent fires continue to be investigated.
