Mayoral election 2025: Higher participation in Brandenburg!

Today, November 9th, 2025, Brandenburg an der Havel will be dominated by the mayoral election. At 2:00 p.m., voter turnout was already at 26.6 percent, which represents a pleasing increase compared to 22.9 percent at the same time in the 2018 election, as the city of Brandenburg reports. The election not only represents an important decision for the city, but also a remarkable level of interest from citizens.

What many people don't know: This year, postal voters can also breathe a sigh of relief, because the number of postal voters is higher than in 2018. So if you can't go to the ballot box in person, you have the opportunity to cast your vote quickly and easily. “To make voting easier, we opened postal voting early,” said Conny Thiele, head of the Office for Statistics and Elections. Polling stations are open until 6:00 p.m. and the first provisional results are expected from 7:00 p.m., while the provisional final result is expected to be published around 8:00 p.m.

How does postal voting work?

Postal voting has long been an integral part of voting for all eligible voters. Election notifications should reach citizens by October 19, 2025. Anyone who has not yet received a notification should quickly contact the electoral authority at Nicolaiplatz 30. Postal voting documents can be purchased shamelessly conveniently online at www.stadt-brandenburg.de/briefwahl apply or use the QR code on the election notification. But be careful: these applications must arrive at the election authority by Wednesday, November 5th at 12 p.m.

However, there is more to an election than just numbers and deadlines. The democratic process thrives on participation and engaged citizens. In Germany, the proportion of eligible voters who will take part in elections will be approximately 60.5 million in 2025. Historically, voter turnout ranges from 70.8 percent in 2009 to a record of 91.1 percent in 1972. A notable change has taken place in recent years, with voter turnout among older voters increasing, while younger voters are less active.

The candidates at a glance

In this mayoral election, six candidates are competing for the office, whose programs will certainly be of interest to many voters. The general election conditions encourage candidacy and make it easy for the population to obtain information and, if necessary, to vote for a specific personality.

In today's world, it is crucial that citizens recognize the value of their voice. The city offers comprehensive information about the election results on its website and thanks the election workers for their tireless efforts. The counting of votes and the evaluation of postal voters takes place after the polling stations close - and you can stay excited!

At a time when voter turnout is more important than ever, the city is urging everyone to cast their vote. This not only strengthens democracy, but also sets an example for common coexistence.
