Heavenly Pagoda in Hohen Neuendorf: People's motion against impending demolition!
In Hohen Neuendorf, the future of the sky pagoda is caught in an exciting dilemma. The iconic building, which has served as a restaurant since it opened in 2002, is the focus of intensive discussions about urban monument protection. This reports maz-online.de and highlights the current location of the charming building.
After the sale to KW-Development (KWD) GmbH, the restaurant is facing extensive changes. City planning plans to create up to 620 new apartments on the area on both sides of Oranienburger Strasse. However, parliamentary group leader Michael Gerlach from the Gerlach/FDP/Animal Protection Party/BSW/Zimmermann faction has submitted an application to prevent the demolition of the pagoda and to place the monument under protection. The application was submitted to the city council (SVV) on September 25, 2025.
The meaning of the sky pagoda
The Sky Pagoda is not only a restaurant, but is also considered a landmark of the city of Hohen Neuendorf. The structure is modeled after the famous Temple of Heaven in Beijing and contains numerous cultural symbols that represent good luck and prosperity. During construction, 72 containers containing artistic stone figures and furniture were imported from China, adding to the pagoda's unique atmosphere. But now the new investor has other plans that could endanger the restaurant and its cultural heritage.
Gerlach is confident that alternative uses for the pagoda could be considered, such as a daycare center or youth club. The city administration, on the other hand, would like to wait for the discussion in the SVV before making final decisions. However, the discussion about monument protection could drag on for some time—the process for registering a monument can vary from a few weeks to several months.
Urban monument protection in focus
Urban monument protection is of great importance in Germany in order to preserve cultural heritage and protect historic city centers. How Wikipedia explains, the aim of monument protection is the preservation of identifying values without these being impaired by new buildings or renovations. Monument protection plays a central role, particularly in areas of historical importance.
In this context, the Sky Pagoda has the potential to be of value not only as a restaurant but also as a cultural heritage site. It remains to be seen whether the city council's efforts will bear fruit and whether the pagoda can be protected as part of a future-oriented city plan. For the time being, however, it remains a popular contact point for the citizens of Hohen Neuendorf and an example of the challenges that urban monument protection brings with it.
