MSC: Nostalgia in the Dorfkrug: GDR jukebox and home cooking await you!
In the small village of Meseberg there is a restaurant that not only impresses with its rustic atmosphere, but also with nostalgic sounds from an old jukebox. The Village mug is a place where the past remains alive. The wooden music box, a rarity from the GDR era, was made in 1965 and mainly plays hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Whether “You Forgot the Color Film” by Nina Hagen (1974) or other classics – here guests can enjoy melodies that have shaped an entire generation.
Visitors to the Dorfkrug not only appreciate the music, but also the handmade, honest cuisine. Elke Nähring, the owner of the restaurant, attaches great importance to quality and personal contact with her guests. The menu includes traditional dishes such as solyanka and authentic Wiener Schnitzel, which is particularly popular. They also offer a sirloin steak made from meadow beef, which is known for its freshness and quality.
A meeting point for the region
The restaurant primarily attracts visitors from Berlin who want to enjoy the surrounding nature and the Weitlingsee. Although bicycle tourism is booming in the region, interest from locals has so far been rather low. Nevertheless, Nähring and her partner Jan Beutlich draw a positive conclusion from the past year. Despite increased costs and changing drinking habits - most guests are consuming less alcohol - food sales have remained stable.
Once a month, the Dorfkrug organizes a cultural program that is intended to appeal to more than just the locals. Events like “Bingo with Music” create a lively atmosphere and offer guests the opportunity to spend time together. The next events are a lecture on “Right-Wing Lifestyle” on November 15th and a bingo for young and old on November 21st.
A piece of GDR history
The old music box is not the only relic from the GDR era that fascinates guests. The cultural history of the GDR, as presented in Gerd Dietrich's works, offers an exciting context for the memories that the music box evokes. Dietrich is described as a “lone warrior” who did thorough research into GDR history. His volumes illuminate different eras of culture and are of great importance for many GDR researchers. These cultural connections give the Dorfkrug a special touch and make it a place where stories live on.
The Dorfkrug recently replaced its old, round tables with more modern Ikea models to create a more inviting setting. The cozy atmosphere is perfectly complemented by the wooden counter, which came from the previous owners. Elke and Jan took over the Dorfkrug during the Corona pandemic in 2020 and are optimistic about the future. Her plans include adding more pictures of the region's residents and the desire to purchase the record “A Sky-Blue Trabant” by Sonja Schmidt (1973) for the jukebox.
The restaurant's opening hours vary depending on the season, but you can be sure that the food is freshly prepared. Visitors are advised to allow some time to fully enjoy the dishes. If you are planning private celebrations, you can also rent the Dorfkrug hall for up to 50 people.
More information about events and cuisine can be found on the Dorfkrug website.
