New life for the Amthauptmannshaus: renovation and cultural center planned!

Something is happening in Oranienburg! City leader Alexander Lasesicke has grandiose plans for the historic mayor's house on Breite Straße. This impressive building, built in 1657 under the reign of Electress Louise Henriette, is not only the oldest house in the city after Oranienburg Palace, but is also facing a major transformation. Lasesicke emphasizes the importance of the building both for the history of the city and for future use.

The plan is to integrate the tourist information office into the mayor's house and to prepare the upper floor as office space for Tourismus und Kultur Oranienburg gGmbH (TKO). However, these ambitious plans are subject to extensive renovation, in which the city will invest around 1.5 million euros in order to deal with the current damage such as crumbling plaster and severe cracks in the stucco ceilings. The last tenant, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), left the building in 2001, and the Amthauptmannshaus has been waiting for a revitalized future ever since.

A piece of history

The Amthauptmannshaus is more than just a building; It was the town hall from 1851 to 1923 and served as a local history and inland navigation museum as well as a district museum from 1935 to 1957. It got its name from the highest official, the Amthauptmann, who administered and controlled Oranienburg and the surrounding villages. The rear of the building has a very special touch, as it is designed to look out from the castle park and is considered its front side. High-ranking noblemen stayed there, which gave the house the nickname “Kavalierhaus”.

Alexander Lasesicke is also planning to redesign access to the castle park. The previous entrance has only been used temporarily since the 2009 State Garden Show. A new entrance could give the mayor's house an additional quality and strengthen the connection to the surrounding area. The inclusion of the adjacent backyard, which borders the castle park, is an important aspect of the planning.

On the way to implementation

The plans for moving the tourist information office and the office space for the TKO are currently still pending. Funding for the renovations remains uncertain and there is currently no secured funding. However, the city hopes that creative solutions can be found to make the Amthauptmannshaus a lively center of public life in Oranienburg again. Given the historical significance that the city leaders attach to the venerable walls, one thing is clear: there is still a lot of work to be done here, but those in charge have already shown a good hand!
