New school project in Schönfließ: 700 places for Oberhavel students!
In today's world with its diverse challenges, there are some exciting developments in the Oberhavel region that affect both education and agriculture. Education Minister Steffen Freiberg (SPD) has just handed over the approval for the construction of a new comprehensive school in Schönfließ. A new school building is scheduled to be built here in the 2028/29 school year, offering space for up to 700 students. The Oberhavel district is investing around 60 million euros in this project. This measure is a clear sign of the increasing need for school places in the region, which results from updated student number forecasts.
In the wake of the current situation, there is a growing commitment to education at the Mühlenbecker Land location. More and more parents and children are looking for suitable school options and the new comprehensive school seems to be a valuable addition.
Mandatory stable due to bird flu
A completely different issue concerns poultry farmers in the region: Due to H5N1 being found in wild birds, poultry must be kept in stables throughout the Oberhavel district. This affects all species, from chickens to geese. Over 200,000 animals have already had to be killed due to bird flu. The Central Association of the German Poultry Industry warns of possible supply bottlenecks for eggs and poultry meat, while describing the situation as “oppressive”.
However, the zoos in Germendorf, Kunsterspring and Perleberg remain open despite the obligation to keep stables, although they are taking special measures to protect bird populations. Aviaries are covered and feeding is temporarily not possible. On Halloween weekend, the zoos also hold special promotions to offer their visitors an experience despite the restrictions.
Political news from Zehlendorf
There is also political news in Zehlendorf: after two resignations from the local council, a new election is imminent. At the moment only local mayor Ahmet Öztemel can make decisions, which severely limits the ability to act. In order to inform citizens, an information event will take place this evening at 7 p.m. in the Zehlendorf community center. The new local council election could then take place in February 2026.
New restaurant in the center of Hohen Neuendorf
Where do the foodies go? On October 31st, a new Indian restaurant called Amruth will open in Hohen Neuendorf, which not only offers tandoori chicken, but also delicious cocktails. A café offering German cakes remains in place in order to give the older residents of Hohen Neuendorf their usual meeting place.
Different facets of life can be seen in Oberhavel - from new educational opportunities to agricultural challenges to culinary highlights. It remains exciting to see what further developments the region will experience in the coming months.
