Storm warning! NRW is experiencing a dramatic drop in temperature and thunderstorms!
This Sunday, June 22nd, 2025, North Rhine-Westphalia shows its summery side with temperatures of up to 35 degrees. But the joy of the heat doesn't last long. Experts from German Weather Service (DWD) warn that a cold front from Deep ZIROS will move over the west and northwest of Germany in the evening and bring with it an abrupt end to summer temperatures.
As already mentioned, the temperature on Monday will drop to 21 to 24 degrees, while in the high altitudes it will be a maximum of 19 degrees, which is more than 10 Kelvin less than the day before. A real refreshment or rather a cool shock for all sun worshipers!
Severe weather warnings announced
In addition to the drop in temperature, meteorologists are predicting severe weather for Sunday afternoon and evening. These include local thunderstorms with gusts of up to 85 km/h and heavy rain of between 15 and 25 liters per square meter. The Weather portal points out that the thunderstorms are moving further to the east and there is a risk of heavier gusts of up to 100 km/h and hailstones of up to 2 cm in size.
A look at the weather situation on Monday reveals that the north of North Rhine-Westphalia will be particularly badly affected. The air will cool down, but thunderstorm activity will continue afterwards - a recurring spectacle that is likely to accompany this week. For many, finding the right weather for spending time outdoors quickly becomes a challenge.
Long-term climate trends
The current weather extremes are in a larger context. The DWD found in its analysis of the climate reference periods that the periods 1991 to 2020 already set the new standards for the assessment of long-term climate developments. These reference periods help to identify and understand long-term trends, as these periods need to be adjusted to take current climate changes into account.
The constant warming and the fluctuations in temperatures mean that summers in Germany can become increasingly hotter and more unstable. A phenomenon that is still noticeable today.
Users of the ZDF podcast “Climate and Weather” have been advised that the next weather updates for the weekend and beyond should be closely monitored. In view of the worsening situation in the coming days, it is important to keep an eye on the weather situation!
