Forest fire near Senftenberg: Fire brigade successfully completes extinguishing work!

There are fierce fires in the beautiful nature of Brandenburg: Despite the challenging conditions, the fire department seems to be gaining the upper hand. On Thursday, a forest fire broke out near Senftenberg in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district. According to a spokeswoman for the Lausitz control center, the extinguishing work has now been largely completed. Over 100 firefighters were on duty for several hours to control the fire, which had set around one hectare of forest between Peickwitz and Biehlen ablaze. On Thursday evening, the emergency services were finally able to extinguish most of the flames, but a fire safety guard remains on site to continue to monitor the area, as rbb24 reports.

This type of fire is not uncommon in our region, especially during the current warm season. The forest plays an important role in Germany - if I may say so, it is not only a source of wood and habitat for many animals, but also an important place of refuge for us humans. The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food has been collecting data on forest fires since the 1970s to better understand the situation and prevent future fires.

Support and major challenges in Lieberose

Parallel to the extinguishing work near Senftenberg, the fire brigade is fighting a major fire in the Lieberoser Heide. Since Monday morning, this has covered an area of around 100 hectares - in an area that is densely overgrown and lies between Byhlen and Klein Liebitz. The fire brigades are fighting the flames with around 120 emergency services, supported by around 30 emergency vehicles. One can imagine that the conditions are anything but easy: due to the danger of ammunition in the area, fire-fighting work may only be carried out via approved routes. Federal police and Bundeswehr helicopters were mobilized to support the firefighting work from the air, as the Wochenkurier reports. This major damage situation has now transferred responsibility for fighting the fire to the Dahme-Spreewald district.

The situation is serious. District Administrator Stephan Loge asks residents to keep windows and doors closed as smoke moves into the surrounding areas. There is no need to think about evacuation or road closures - at least not yet. State Secretary Katrin Lange is also planning to visit the operational area in the afternoon to get an idea of the situation. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop further.

The importance of the forest in the context of fires

The current fire events clearly show how important it is to protect our forests. According to the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food, the forest not only has a protective function for the environment, but also serves as a retreat for many animal species and as a recreational area for us humans. Active forest fire prevention has recently become increasingly important in order to minimize the number and size of fires. The data collected for preventing and fighting forest fires is of great importance.

The events of these days are a clear call to keep your eyes and ears open. Nature needs protection and the emergency services need our support. Together we should do everything we can to preserve the forest and our environment.
