Erkner in construction chaos: Friedrichstrasse closed until 2026!
Erkner, a city that is in the middle of a construction frenzy! Since the beginning of March 2025, extensive construction work has begun on Friedrichstrasse and is expected to last until October 2026. During this time, both residents and commuters face major challenges. Friedrichstrasse is not only being made barrier-free, but numerous renovations are also taking place, including the renovation of the Flaken flow bridge and the laying of drinking water pipes. The project, a joint effort by the state road department, the city of Erkner and the Strausberg-Erkner water association, is essential, but people's everyday lives will be severely affected. According to Moz.de, business owners report losses in sales of between 30 and 50 percent.
The construction work includes several phases, with the first phase taking place on southern Friedrichstrasse until October 2025. The road will be completely closed in some areas and diversions will be set up for traffic. The complete closure of the section between the oval roundabout and the intersection with Seestrasse leaves hardly any room for spontaneous visits to the shops. Yvonne Dagge, owner of “Krümelland Stifte & Co”, reports that she has lost around 50 percent of her sales and would like a bypass for better accessibility. Thorsten Bürgerle, operator of Café Bürgerle, also speaks of a decline in sales of around 30 percent. In such a situation, those affected talk about the difficulties caused by the construction sites. Fortunately, accessibility for residents, pedestrians and cyclists remains, so that the city remains lively.
Settling in on the construction site
District Administrator Frank Steffen, who inspected the situation on site on July 3, 2025, sees the need to design the city center as a social living space. He would also like to stimulate the motivation for a street festival to inaugurate Friedrichstrasse after the construction work has been completed. This could be a nice occasion to give people the opportunity to celebrate the redesigned street together.
It's not just the users of Friedrichstrasse that have a far-reaching problem. According to the DIHK, transport routes in Germany are often dilapidated and in poor condition. An efficient transport system is essential for the economy, and the pressure for faster construction projects is increasing. In this context, the expansion of Friedrichstrasse is not only a local signal, but also an important signal for the entire transport infrastructure in the region.
The future in sight
Detached from the current challenges, it is clear that Erkner is also signaling the ongoing need for expansion and renovation. The 2025 draft budget provides a total of 28.6 billion euros for federal transport routes, although an increase to at least 32 billion euros is recommended in order to be able to meet the challenges of the future. The fact that Saxony-Anhalt wants to advance the first comprehensive renovation plan for the squares in Berlin underlines how important a multi-year financing strategy is for long-term measures.
The renovation work may currently lead to difficulties, but the path through these construction measures ultimately leads to a better future for Erkner. An end to the construction standstill is welcomed, but the shaking up of the transport infrastructure remains in full swing. The city can only hope that today's difficulties will soon become the reason for tomorrow's celebrations.
