Explosion on motorsport boat: Greifswald fishing festival in danger!

On July 19, 2025, a dramatic incident occurred in the Danish Wiek in front of the port of Greifswald when a motorsport boat suddenly exploded. At 1:50 p.m. an as yet unexplained deflagration on board caused the boat to almost completely sink. On board were an 82-year-old man and an 80-year-old woman, both from Germany. Luckily they were rescued in time.

The two injured people were rescued by the water rescue service and transported to the Greifswald University Hospital. While the exact circumstances of the explosion are still unknown, the police have already opened an investigation into negligent bodily harm. The ongoing criminal investigation service and the water police are involved in the investigation, and are also tasked with securing evidence, as Tagesschau reports.

Rescue and recovery operations

The sunken boat drifted towards Greifswald, where a fishing festival was taking place this weekend. After the explosion, measures were taken to temporarily secure the boat and it was towed to Ladebow harbor. Both police and fire boats were used for this purpose. A planned rescue of the boat using a crane from the Technical Relief Agency (THW) is also on the agenda.

The fire brigades, which are trained for operations on the water, can use boats for rescue and rescue in an emergency. As Sichere Fire Department points out, boat operators and crew must have special training to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and skills for such operations.

Dangers on the water

The risks associated with water operations are diverse. Weather conditions, obstacles such as flotsam and dangerous current conditions can significantly impact the safety of water rescues. It becomes particularly critical when boats become unable to maneuver or even capsize. Thorough preparation and adherence to safety precautions, including wearing life jackets, are essential to minimize risk.

The incident on the Danish Wiek is also reminiscent of a similar incident that was reported just a few days ago on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast. This shows the importance of continually reviewing and improving safety standards and measures to avoid such tragedies.

The investigation into the exact cause of the explosion continues and it is hoped that both the injured people will make a speedy recovery and future incidents of this nature can be avoided.
