Trial against 15-year-old: terrorist plans for Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna
A 15-year-old suspected Islamic State supporter has been on trial in Berlin since Monday, charged with preparing a terrorist attack. How rbb24 reported, the young adult is said to have supported the main suspect, a 19-year-old Turk, who was involved in planned attacks on three Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna in August 2024. These events led to the cancellation of the concerts, which were planned for a sold-out stadium with up to 65,000 fans per event.
The decision to cancel came after government officials tipped off concrete attack plans that focused on the Ernst Happel Stadium. When the 19-year-old was arrested in Ternitz, about 75 kilometers from Vienna, authorities found chemical substances that could be used to make explosives. In addition to him, another person was arrested in Vienna whose connections to the attack plans are unclear. The authorities reported that there are currently no other suspected accomplices known in Austria.
Delicate investigations and security precautions
The two arrests led to increased security surveillance and special anti-terrorism units were mobilized to ensure security around the concerts. Vienna State Police Chief Gerhard Pürstl noted that although the danger was assessed as minimal, surveillance still needed to be increased. Austria's Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler praised the investigators for their quick reaction and emphasized that they did not want to let their way of life be taken away.
In the context of recent developments, the European Union sees a growing need to address the threat of terrorism. How European Parliament reports, Europol received numerous tips about terrorist content online in 2023 and has already issued over 1,400 removal orders. These measures are showing initial success in combating the spread of such content.
There is currently no information regarding the accused 15-year-old that he is in custody; he remains at large. The trial at the Berlin Court of Appeal is scheduled for seven days until the end of August 2025, although the public is expected to be excluded due to the defendant's young age.
The cancellation of Taylor Swift's concerts in Vienna and the subsequent developments highlight the ongoing concern about terrorist activity at the European level. The upcoming court hearings will show what further findings will come to light and how the security situation in the region will develop.
