Animal welfare scandal in Brandenburg: chicken farms under attack!
The chicken fattening facilities in Brandenburg are currently the focus of serious allegations that are triggering a huge public response. How Farmer's newspaper reports, the Brandenburg State Farmers' Association has distanced itself from three companies that are suspected of violating animal welfare regulations. These incidents were brought to light through haunting images from the animal rights organization Aninova, which documents sick and dead animals. Association president Henrik Wendorff described the situation as outrageous and explained that these grievances cannot go uncommented.
The public prosecutor's office is now investigating the three chicken farms that have joined the Animal Welfare Initiative. These initiatives originally stood for higher quality farming conditions, but recent incidents raise serious questions. Loud Daily Mirror KFC, the fast food chain, has already stopped working with these companies and removed them from the supplier list. The group describes the grievances as “unacceptable” and has announced that it will carry out additional checks on other poultry suppliers.
Consequences for companies
After the revelations, the chicken fattening facilities affected face enormous consequences. The withdrawal of the quality seals for the QS testing system and the deletion from the higher grouping in the Animal Welfare Initiative are under consideration. “Company management must open their eyes to these consequences,” says Wendorff, who points out that the labels represent good husbandry conditions and directly influence the producer price. However, this situation is not the first of its kind - the credibility of the animal welfare seals is in jeopardy.
The Animal Welfare Initiative has confirmed that violations of the Animal Welfare Act were found in two of the affected companies. In a third company, an immediate blockage was implemented, although there was no evidence of irregularities until the publications. This raises concerns about the oversight exercised over these establishments.
Animal protection law in focus
The investigation initiated by the public prosecutor's office is a clear indication of the importance of the animal protection law in Germany. This law obliges owners and breeders to spare animals unnecessary pain and suffering. Looking at recent developments, it becomes clear how relevant the provisions of the law are, which is based on Article 20a of the Basic Law and aims to ensure the welfare of animals. The existence of animal protection organizations like Aninova is of great importance in bringing these hard facts to light.
In times when awareness of animal welfare and species-appropriate husbandry is growing and per capita consumption of poultry meat in Germany increased by almost 4 percent in 2024, the need to carry out strict controls is becoming increasingly clear. Viewers watching the research will ask themselves: Where does the meat really come from and how safe are our animal welfare standards?
Reports of animal husbandry abuses like this will hopefully be seen as a wake-up call for serious improvements to conditions in chicken production.
